For example, instead of saying that you have extensive experience, state the exact number of years you have spent in a given function or field. Also, you might name specific projects on which you have worked, and indicate precisely what your contributions and achievements were. Furthermore, successfully marketing yourself through a resume or a personal profile requires precisely demonstrating what you can do for a potential employer. How to Respond When You Get Laid Off or Fired - The Muse
How to Respond When You Get Laid Off or Fired - The MuseHow to Respond When You Get Laid Off or Fired One of the most shocking conversations you will ever have in your job is when your boss tells you that youre done working for the company. Maybe its a layoff that completely blindsides you. Maybe its a performance-related issue that you were aware of. No matter the cause, the actual event can be a total shocker. While getting fired and getting laid off may involve different things, its important to handle the situation professionally either way. And one way to do that is to prepare for it before it happens. So if youre concerned at all about losing your job in the near future, this is well worth a read.Because as challenging as it may be to stay focused and present in the conversation, thats your goal. It might be difficult to think of it as such, but this is an important business discussion. Think negotiating your severance or termination package. Here are seven tips on how to handle yourself and what to say when youre at a loss for words.1. Stay Present and Manage Your EmotionsI once heard a colleague rant that she wanted to get laid off in the next round of workforce reductions. She was vocal about how she would welcome the chance to get away from her team, her boss, her job. In the next round, as luck would have it, she got laid off.But she didnt run around and high five everyone declaring her happiness. She freaked out. She yelled. She told everyone how unfair the system was. She loudly declared she was not going to help transition her work to someone else. There was a tacit understanding among the managers that, Yep, we made a good decision on that one.You dont want to be that person.Even if you hate your job and are pining for a layoff notice, a job loss can knock the wind right out of you. The choice to leave is no longer yours someone has made the decision for you, and that can be hard to swallow. Instead of ranting like my former colleague, take a long , slow exhale and ask for a minute to process the news. When you manage your emotions by pausing like this, you help yourself stay calm, and you give yourself a chance to be present for the rest of the inevitable conversation. And by not allowing yourself to react immediately, you preserve your hard-earned reputation.2. Keep Your DignityA former employee was on a last-chance performance agreement. Basically, if he screwed up one more time, hed be fired, and he knew it. Well, it wasnt long before he screwed up. When I delivered the news of his termination, I could binnensee the layers of shock, regret, and remorse on his face. He mightve cried. He promised to change his behavior. He begged me to change the decision. (I didnt.) It was cringe-worthy, and I was embarrassed for him. When managers are preparing for layoffs and termination, the process is well on its way by the time you get the message. The organizations new head count has been calculated, the separation package prepared, a nd workspace charts changed. Begging for your job will almost never change the managers mind. So keep your dignity intact and focus on the rest of your conversation.3. Get Your Stories StraightAsk how the company plans to represent your separation from the company. When you seek your next gig, your employer and you want to be singing the same karaoke lyrics, if you know what I mean. You can help inform this. A simple request will do it I want to be sure that when you reference how I departed the company, it doesnt hurt my chances for my next job. Can we talk a bit about what you will say when others ask? Ask for this in writing, so you have an official document that says you were laid off and not fired. If youve been fired, your employer might agree not to mention the termination and instead simply verify the dates you were employed by the organization. 4. Inquire About Getting Assistance Finding a New RoleMany companies hire consultants to help employees find new gigs. Ask what kind of erleichterung, if any, the organization plans to provide. Determine how long that support will last, and what kind of career coaching youre eligible for. And, again, get it in writing if you can.5. Ask if Youre Allowed to Apply for Other Positions InternallyCompany policy may dictate this. Some places will let you do so right away. Others may impose a waiting period before rehiring or allowing you to freelance for the company in the future. If you were fired for performance-related issues, you probably dont want to ask, and your employer probably hopes you wont. But, if youre being let go because of team restructuring, its worth asking what other opportunities may be available to you. 6. Take Care of YouGet the details on severance, health insurance, when you can expect your final paycheck will arrive, how you will be compensated for unused vacation time, unused sick or personal time, when youll be reimbursed for travel expenses, and how youre expected to get all of your things home. Some offices will offer to ship items to you so that you dont have to deal with the incredibly awkward and uncomfortable packing up your area while your employees work beside you.If you have stock options, bonuses, sales commissions, tuition reimbursements, or other extras attached to your position, ask about those as well. In a layoff, ask if youre going to be expected to help transition the work, what the expectations are, and how long that period will last. And if youre getting terminated, get clear on whether youre expected to leave the building ASAP or if you can take a few hours to clean up your computer and head out at the end of the day.Once youve got a handle on these details, you can step away for a day or two, and test the areas where youd like to negotiate. Perhaps you want more severance, a longer period in transition counseling, or a zurckhalten bonus for doing a super great job transitioning your work. Be prepared to justify any requests and outline a specific p roposal for what youd like to see.7. Dont Sign AnythingYoure going to come up with more questions over time. Let your manager know youll review all the information thats provided. Let her know youll revert with any questions or clarification you need.Until all the details are hashed out, dont sign anything. Most employers want you to sign a general release that says youll bring no legal action against them. Your final payouts are contingent upon you signing the documents. If there was ever a good time to have an attorney read over a document before you sign it, this is itUnexpected moments like layoffs or terminations can feel like a devastating personal attack. And theres no doubt, they can be difficult to process. When youre able to step back, and ask for what you need, however, youll find a small sense of empowerment that might surprise you. No matter how hard the news is, stay cool, be a pro, and start thinking about your next move. And remember to take a couple of days before y ou hastily (and dramatically) post a major update on your social media channels.Photo of man stressed courtesy of Thomas Barwick/Getty Images.

Remember, the information you present is all your potential employer has to go on when deciding whether to call you for an interview.Mistakes and Typos: Spelling and grammar errors instantly detract from the impression you set out to make. Make sure to review your resume carefully, remembering that spell-checking programs will not always catch common errors.Negative Phrasing: Your resume is not the setting to practice self-deprecation. Instead of apologizing for what you view as your deficiencies, promote the skills and qualities that you will bring to your position.Resume Content Jane Doe 387 Elm Street, Oceanview, MA 11111 555.789.3984 Janedoe3@anymail.com Summary Creative, confident general manager takes pride in coming up with innovative solutions. Top 4 Degrees to Consider for a Double Major
Top 4 Degrees to Consider for a Double Major Top 4 Degrees to Consider for a Double Major Engineering isnt exactly the easiest of majors. However, when you specialize, theres always a question of what else you can handle. You want to handle the business side: Why should an engineering company believe you can? Youre interested in bioengineering: What do you know about biology? The answer to these kinds of questions could be a double major. Lets look at the top subjects to consider for this bold move. Business When an engineer is hired early in his or her career, they are generally in more technical positions. If they want to work their way up, a business background can be crucial. Theyre not just looking for your inventiveness, but whether you can see the bottom line, says Dr. Robert Amundsen, an associate professor and chair of the energy management graduate program at the NYIT School of Engineering and Computing Sciences. Can you explain to them why your product or idea will make them money? Can you bring the statistics to your presentation? Its also about being familiar with the terminology of business and these kinds of classes can get you to that point. You may also want to run your own business someday. Many a genius went bankrupt from only seeing a vision and not a profit and loss statement. English/Communications One of the biggest criticisms of engineers is communication. In the e-mail era, you cant avoid writing, anymore than you can avoid a phone call. You need to be able to express your ideas in a way that other people can understand, Amundsen says. You cant get a team to move forward if youre the only person who knows what youre talking about. Use these courses as an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and improve a weakness. Better to learn from the criticism of a professor than have the consequences felt when out in the real world. Geology This major can literally be like striking oil. There are so many opportunities in this field and any leg up makes you potentially very marketable, Amundsen says. To have a chance to be years ahead in knowledge, whether its applied to working for the oil industry or an environmental organization, this major lends itself to engineering. Biology As a discipline with so many applicationsnature, anatomy and beyondthis can be your in to an unlimited world of breakthroughs for the benefit of humankind. In addition, biotechnology is also a field offering high-paying positions and cutting-edge research. Hey, Whats a Summer? When you consider how much time is spent on a four-year degree, summer courses may be the largest trade you have to make for this extra major, Amundsen says. The good news is engineering is one of the most attractive fields around. The great news may be how attractive you are with two degrees on a resume. The key is to not overwhelm yourself by the attempt. If you find yourself spread too thin, revert to the single degree. After all, a double major is to be seen as an opportunity, not an unyielding burden. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. For Further Discussion When you consider how much time is spent on a four-year degree, summer courses may be the largest trade you have to make for this extra major.Dr. Robert Amundsen, NYIT

Why Human Resources Management Is Important
Why Human Resources Management Is Important Why Human Resources Management Is Important Debates about the importance of Human Resources Management occur daily in workplaces. Some employees regard Human Resource (HR) as the policing, traumatizing, systematizing arm of executive management. These employees see HR staff as gatekeepers, people who hold little interest in employee concerns. Such employees also see HR staff as supporting managers, not regular employees, sometimes attributing nefarious goals and motives to HR staff or even talking about why they hate HR. Part of the problem is that HR has to balance the interests of five different stakeholders, so employees can feel their interests are ignored. 2:07 Watch Now: Why HR Matters Now More Than Ever Why HR Is Important A good HR department is critical to an employee-oriented, productive workplace in which employees are energized and engaged. Below are a few key reasons why: HR monitors the culture. Some organizations say that HR owns the culture, but as in all other employee relations matters, we recommend that the ownership is spread across all employees.HR owns the overall talent management processes. In conjunction with other managers, HR leads the way in management development, performance management, succession planning, career paths, and other aspects of talent management. HR cant do it alone and relies heavily on managers and executive staff to help plan and execute the strategies. However, HR has to bring new ideas and effective practices into the organization. HR is responsible for the overall recruiting of a superior workforce. Once again, HR cannot do it alone but must provide support to hiring managers who are also responsible for recruiting a superior workforce. HR must provide leadership, training, scheduling assistance, a systematic hiring process, recruitment planning processes, interview expertise, selection monitoring, and more.HR recommends market-based salaries and develops an overall strategic compensation plan. HR provides guidance to managers as they determine the salary ranges within their organizations. HR researches, recommends and implements employee benefits programs that attract and retain your best employees. HR is also responsible for controlling costs and considering various options before recommending adoption.HR is responsible for recommending and instituting strategies for people and the organization that further the attainment of the organizations strategic goals. If your organization is changing direction, developing new products, changing mission, vision, or goals, HR must lead the way with employee programs and processes. HR makes sure that workplace activities, events, celebrations, ceremonies, field trips, and team building opportunities are occurring. Other employees plan and implement the activities with or without HRs help, but the HR leader is generally responsible for monitoring the budget and providing committee oversight.HR advocates for employees who have issues or conflict with management and coaches managers and executives who seek a more effective approach to working with particular employees. Not everyone loves each other but they need to develop effective working relationships with contributions and productivity. HR can help by knowing the players and taking on the necessary role of advocate, coach and/or mediator. The importance of HR is easily overlooked in the busy day-to-day in the workplace, but without contributions in each of these areas, the organization would be less successful.

Jumpstarting the Economy
Jumpstarting the Economy Jumpstarting the Economy Jumpstarting the Economy In May and June 2009, the Human Capital Institute and Worldwide conducted extensive survey research into the effects of the global Great Recession on the workforce. More than 700 companies and almost 5,000 Passive and Active Job Seekers participated. Though many respondents felt they would not be affected directly by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) and the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), others gave very specific examples of how they perceive an impact: Just 4% of companies surveyed reported a stimulus benefit, or an indirect benefit through their clients. Most stimulus monies have yet to reach organizations and remain to be allocated; HR professionals report that expectations have been miss-set for the speed at which the stimulus can create new jobs that reach workers. Job seekers report seeing stimulus funds through extensions and increases of unemployment payments, and reduction of COBRA health insurance costs. Read this report for more of these in-depth findings and for a case study that demonstrates the stimuluss impact at Oregon Health Science University, a healthcare organization in Portland, Oregon. Is it ever okay to cry at work A case for and against it
Is it ever okay to cry at work A case for and against it Is it ever okay to cry at work A case for and against it The topic of proper workplace etiquette can launch a thousand debates, because:1) every workplace is different2) every employee and manager relationship is different3) things that are standard workplace behavior to some people, might not be to others. What makes workplace etiquette even tougher for people to totally agree upon is the fact that in many cases, human emotions naturally get involved.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! That leads us to one emotion-driven behavior in the workplace and whether itâs ever OK:Is it ever okay to cry at work?Whether itâs because something happened at work that has really unsettled you or something happened outside of work (maybe in your personal life) that has impacted your emotional composure when in the workplace.Tear-prone employees say that on the one hand, since crying is a natural and often unavoidable part of life then it must be acceptable at work, while others may argue that itâs entirely unprofessional to ever cry in a workplace setting. While there isnât one universal rule about crying at work, hereâs a break down of the arguments for and against crying in the workplace to let you decide for yourself:For: Crying at work is just fineIf youâre one to possibly cry at work or have even done so before, youâre not alone. An estimated 41% of women have cried at work at some point in their professional lives, as have 9% of men (though these figures may underestimate workplace crying, particularly among men who face stigma for shedding tears). That shows that crying in the workplace is common. But is it appropriate? Some workplace leaders, particularly women, say absolutely yes.Scientists use the term âpsychic tearsâ for the crying that happens when we feel stressed, angry, sad or some emotions, as opposed other types of tears that happen in response to physiological things like when we have dry eyes (basal tears) or when there are irritants like dust or dirt in the air (reflexive tears). These psychic tears often arise spontaneously and may be beyond our control. That means that, technically speaking, expecting people to never ever cry in the workplace is unnatural because there are physiological triggers for tears too! However, when it comes to just the emotional kind of cry, since a person can experience a full range of emotions during their work livesâ¦shedding an emotional tear at work should be fair game.Something to note, though, is the stigma against crying in the workplace often negatively targets women. Women are more likely to cry than men, which is partly due to socialization AND partly due to biological differences. Women produce six times more of the hormone prolactin, which promotes crying, than men. That means that in periods of high emotionality - whether positive or negative emotions - women may cry more easily. Itâs not a sign of excessive emot ionality but simply a biological reality. Thus, people should not be penalized for workplace tears.Against: Avoid crying at work at all costsOn the other side of the argument are those whoâd say that crying at work is never acceptable.Proponents of this viewpoint say that crying is a sign of excessive emotionality that distracts from the work, and for which there is no reasonable excuse. Just as yelling, throwing things, or snapping at your coworkers is an inappropriate emotional display, so is crying.Other lines of reasoning that further support this particular viewpoint: the fact that crying makes things awkward for the people around you, as many people are unsure how to handle a crying colleague. This awkwardness causes a workplace interaction to become all about you, rather than the issue at hand. Finally, crying often causes others to think less of you. Despite the argument that crying is natural, many people still view it as an inappropriate emotional display. Crying at work may risk your professional reputation or cause others to question your leadership. The bottom line: crying at work is (sometimes) okayThe hard truth is that work can be stressful and emotionally taxing. And since weâre all human, itâs natural to expect that our emotional responses and impulses will prevail from time to time when we happen to be on the clock. So the bottom line? We all might just have to agree to disagree about whether crying at work is truly okay⦠and go with itâs okay sometimes, depending on the circumstances. If youâre someone who tends to cry easily, make your life easier by heading off any negative impressions proactively: âYou may notice that I sometimes become tearful when Iâm really stressed, upset, or excited. I canât help it, so letâs just keep working together when it happens, and Iâll excuse myself if I need to.â This gives your colleagues a helpful framework for how to respond. At the same time, itâs important to be aware of your ow n tendency for tears and emotional displays. If youâre frequently crying at work or other people express concern that you cry too much, itâs worth taking a good hard look at your workplace behavior. Crying excessively may be a sign that youâre too stressed or that you could benefit from some outside help to improve your emotion regulation. As with most things, moderation and balance are key. This article first appeared on Kununu. Self-presentation and your career
Self-presentation and your career Self-presentation and your career The way you present yourself could be costing you a great career.Believe it or not, the way you present yourself could be costing you a great career. Many job seekersâ"and even those already employedâ"are ruining their chances at acquiring a new position by way of their self-presentation both on and offline.Hyper self-awareness isnât an easily adapted trait, but itâs highly necessary when it comes to seeking new employment, maintaining your current position, and the future of your career. The current state of the job market has created a highly competitive environment for job seekers and those individuals hoping for career advancement.Self-Presentation and Career SuccessNow, more than ever, self-presentation and overall brand image are being elevated to a new heightâ"allowing them to either make or break your future career. Job seekers and workers alike owe themselves deeper evaluation and assessment in terms of how others view them.Influencing the perception of your image is essentially managing how others come to understand and view you. This is a crucial factor during the job search. For many individuals who arenât actively seeking a new position, self-presentation is still key piece of the career success puzzle. Carefully assessing and managing how others come to know and view you could mean the difference between a promotion or a layoff.Online PresentationSelf-presentation in an online setting demands your interest and energy. If you arenât paying attention to your online profiles and interactions, itâs likely you could be missing some very important clues to how others interpret your presence. If youâre not actively working to build and maintain an online brand, itâs time to reconsider. Focus on building a presence on social platforms most applicable to your career field and continually interacting, monitoring, and maintaining them to showcase your knowledge. From Twitter to job-specific communities, this social effort will set you up for professional thought leadership, as well as being able to actively control how others not only gain information about you, but also perceive you. What Your Professional Network Says about YouThe most successful careers are fueled by a strong network. Those passive or active job seekers without a strong professional network may get passed by during the job search. A key portion of managing your presentation and image involves maintaining strong professional relationships within your industry. This tells potential employers, hiring managers, and recruiters that youâre invested in your industry and value your professional relationships. While online networking is a focus for many individuals, itâs the face-to-face interaction that provides a chance to manage your self-presentation more effectively. Develop stronger networking efforts by becoming active within professional associations, attending conferences and seminars, and actively networking to find your place within your local an d national industry.Presenting Yourself via Your Professional MaterialsYour resume and portfolio are often the first materials made available during your job search. This presents them as key pieces in your brandâs puzzle. If either of these two professional materials are misrepresenting youâ"youâre out of a job.Similar to your online presentation, your professional materials should also effectively portray your personal brand. Extending the truth or blatantly lying about your qualifications can not only put you in negative light to a potential employer, but also brand you negatively throughout your entire industry. But with a strong focus on self-presentation and personal brand development, your application materials will be able to sell you as the dream candidate. Ensure this by customizing every resume to the position youâre applying for, as well as highlighting your company-matched core values and skills. The Long-Term Effects of Self-PresentationWhen your overall brand an d career history is laid out on the tableâ"youâre being judged. Sometimes itâs too late before an individual realizes the long-term effects of their misrepresentation. Whether during the hiring process or in the face of a raise or promotion, your self-presentation mattersâ"and it all stems from your professional image, online brand, qualifications, and who you know.If possible, start early. Managing how others view you isnât always a walk in the park, especially if your career history has a few blemishes. Potentially negative aspects to watch out for are poor online presentation, job hopping, and previous terminations. Without the careful management of these aspects, itâs easy to limit your future success.Have you found unique career success through proper self-presentation?

Is It Your Age or Your Attitude
Is It Your Age or Your Attitude Is It Your Age or Your Attitude You canât turn back the clock, but you can show hiring managers your passion and record of results. If youâre older than 50 years old, it often seems the deck is stacked against you.Following last yearâs ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in Gross v. FBL Financial Services Inc., which put the burden of proof on the plaintiff in age-discrimination cases, even the government seems out to get you - or, at the very least, unwilling to help.People are angry about the treatment of workers over 50 years old because most of us know we must work well into our 60s before we can retire. But recent research indicates few of us actually want to work well into our 60s - and that tendency may help explain, if not excuse, employersâ prejudices.Dr. David DeLong of research and consulting firm DeLong Associates conducted a study of older workers and hiring traits titled âBuddy Can You Spare a Job?â for the Metlife Mature Market Institute. The report found most older workers felt financial pressure to work into their 60s, but few worked out of a desire to do so. In turn, employers fear theyâre likely to hire employees who are less passionate about their work than their younger counterparts. This brings up an interesting question to ask yourself at this stage of your career: How passionate are you about your work? And how could that passion affect your ability to find a job?Can you find something that you really care about in your work? Your passion (or lack thereof) will show during the interview. So Step One is to consider your own commitment to your current job. How passionate are you?Find your passion, then the jobIf you no longer have passion for your current work, maybe itâs time for some self-examination. While youâve accumulated experience in a number of areas over the years, it may be time to redefine and refocus your story.Sure, you might be good at a lot of things, but ask yourself this question, âOf all the roles and capabilities, what brings me the most joy at this point in my life?â Find that one thing that youâre best at and focus on it. If any of your duties and experiences doesnât directly address that job titleâs requirements, then donât emphasize them. Of course, youâll need a dose of realism, so test the market for this job description or role.Remember, this is your story. Tell it your way. You want to focus your resume to reflect yourself in the most positive, powerful way possible. That means magnifying only the aspects of your background that are relevant to your newly focused career goal and passion. For help with this stage, you might want to consult with a career coach or advisor.Sell results, not yearsOnce youâve identified your goals, you may need to sell them differently from the way you did in the past. Not too long ago, you could win a job just by talking about your skills or the 15 years you spent working at a particular job. Hiring managers today are looking for results, not years. Talk the la nguage an employer understands and appreciates: return on investment. Instead of citing 20 years of experience, identify your benefits to the employer and put them into monetary terms. Support your accomplishments with facts that are benefit-based. Sell them on the way your work has helped your employers realize value.Money talks, and it talks loudly. The good news is that money can trump age. As an employee, you either make money or save money for your employer. Boil your job duties down to answer how many ways youâve helped an employer either to make money, save money or save time. Be prepared to demonstrate instances where youâve already achieved this. For example, if youâre an operations manager, you could include an achievement bullet that might read something like this:Reduced our payroll cost by $1,125 per week by reducing supervising doctor hours from five nights a week to only two nights. When you do this, youâre leveling the playing field by talking money, a subject near and dear to the heart of employers. Theyâll think less about age differences and more about the real problems theyâre facing. You canât eliminate age bias in the workplace, but you can overcome a big hurdle, which is the perception that as an older worker, you lack the passion of a younger worker. You may not be able to regenerate a lost passion, but you can at least develop a renewed enthusiasm and focus on what you want as a job hunter. A more effective sales pitch will go a long way toward overcoming old perceptions about age and indifference.

How to empower your team to build a culture youre proud of
How to empower your team to build a culture youâre proud of How to empower your team to build a culture youâre proud of By 2020, millennials will comprise of roughly 50 percent of the global workforce. Just like the emergence of any other generation, companies will have to deal with a new set of challenges and create a different working environment and culture for their talents. Today, millennials are inevitably becoming a larger influence on the future of our business, while for many companies, baby boomers and Generation X still hold the steering wheel. In a fast-growing global technology company like ours, we recruit talents from the baby boomer generation to millennials. We have over 60 employees from more than 25 different nationalities. We are present in 10 different countries and are still growing. The wide range and set of diversity prompted us to take culture very seriously early on. In order to preserve our companyâs culture and ensure our core values are embodied throughout the organization, we abandoned the traditional way of establishing the companyâs core values. Rather, we let our people create and own the culture themselves. Hereâs how you can look to do the same within your own organization. Creation: Collective thinking During our companyâs first-ever annual retreat in 2014, we asked all employees to independently think about what values matter most, both in the people they work with and the company they build. We then grouped the ideas into different categories based on their semantic definitions, and picked one word to represent each category. Each person then had an equal chance to vote for the value of his/her preference and decide which ones should define our companyâs core values. Based on the results, we discussed the outcomes together and consequentially narrowed down the list that same day. We decided on four elements. Just like that, our company core values were created. The first people we hired to build our company collectively established these values. By taking collective thinking one step forward to collective ownership, we empower everyone to become a culture bearer of the company. Preservation: People culture We work to preserve what we have as we grow. Hiring the right people for the right job is very important, but in order to do so, you first have to find those people. We designed our recruiting process in such a way that every candidate is interviewed and evaluated by the âPeople Teamâ before they go through any formal assessment with our different business units. Hire people who possess both the personal qualities and technical skills required for the job. Because this is easier said than done, we use this recruitment process to reduce the potential risk of compromises that the business units may make - especially when they need to fill any time-sensitive hiring needs. Take advantage of your employeesâ professional network: If our team values someoneâs capability and trusts their character, this candidate is more likely to be a cultural fit for our company. It is equally important to search for the right people outwards as it is from within. Evolution: Feedback and growth Most large companies have formal employee feedback system and provide managerial training to ensure that employees can give and receive feedback for personal and professional development. The intent is to keep employees engaged at work and improve their performances. However, a Deloitte public survey shows that more than half of executives believe that their current performance management approach drives neither employee engagement nor high performance. We believe the traditional feedback system needs to be revamped. All companies, large or small, matured or high-growth, should have feedback mechanisms in place that keep up with their evolving culture. Instead of using a score sheet to quantify employeesâ performance and satisfaction, we use only open-ended questions to guide the feedback sessions, like: âImagine you can take up any role in the company today. What would it be?â âWhat types of skills do you use the most day-to-day, and what do you think are your strengths?â âDo you enjoy doing what you are good at, or would you rather do something you are unfamiliar with? What do you think is the current split between the two types of tasks?â Conduct feedback sessions more frequently in a flexible and personalized manner. Focus your discussion on the employeesâ future goals and aspirations rather than on past performance. Such systems yield more candid and realistic feedback for both the managers and employees, and as a result, a higher level of mutual understanding and communication. As the saying goes, âThe only constant is change.â Corporate culture is no different: One static instruction manual cannot provide the secret sauce to managing ever-evolving company culture. Empower your people to decide the culture that will help them and the company thrive. Managers will stay nimble and keep an open mind. Looking back, I was fortunate to be able to develop our company culture from the ground up. We are able to preserve the essence of our promise to employees, business partners and shareholders. Today, we feel very confident about our culture of success, and putting these systems in place should help you elevate yours as well.
